hi floppy, theres a few apps in the app store that can play avi files and other files straight from the program. no need to convert to mp4 like in the old days. i use cinexplayer and its very good.
if your jailbroken try vlc player in cydia search.

If I understood your question, it is more related to how to copy the movies to iPad. If so there are several possibilities. The easiest one is to use iTunes. Connect your iPad to the USB port (if not allowed wifi transfer). Drop the movie on to your iPad. If the movie is of a format that Apple Movie can't read, then as pointed out by johnyboy1974 download applications like cinexplayer to your iPad. in iTunes, click on the iPad and at the top menu choose Apps. Then scroll the window up until you see the apps that allow file upload in the left hand column. Click on the one you want and drop the movie in it. Now when you open that app in your iPad you see the movie file.
