Upgrade it to 4.2.1 (max fw a 3g supports) and jailbreak it with redsn0w.

Do not do this !!!! You will have to install an iPad baseband which means you can't go back plus it's harder and you may lose some gps function as well !!! No no

Have your phone plugged in and just goto ultrasn0w through cydia to unlock, then you would make another custom fw after that if you need higher fw. Later,
but thought you said it was unlocked in a previous thread/also that it was blocked ? I'm confused

ok dude, thanks for the assistance up to now fella. appreciated.

i first got the phone around a year ago, jailbroke it straight away using 'spirit'.
in jabuary of this year i lost the phone. contactaed vodafone who disabled the phone and sim card. and phone was placed on blacklist.
this morning i found the phone by complete fluke and asked if it was possible to reactivate the phone. maybe give it a new IMIE number. you replied with no, blocked is blocked.
i thouight what the hell and had a poke around youtube and found out about the ultrasnow programme in cydia. ran it, and the phone now works perfectly and is unlocked to all networks.
it does however have an old firmware version, and just wanted to know which one to update it to and what the benefits, if any, there would be.

hope that has made it a little clearer for you dude.

        thank you,
        mick.

Sorry for the bad advice m8, I thought you just wanted to update and jailbreak.

Anyway, you can still use iTunes to download apps, music etc fine, however there is a wonderful little cydia program called Installous where you can download most of the apps from iTunes for free. Please note however that this is probably illegal wherever your from.

Add this repository to cydia - 'cydia.hackulo.us'. You'll find some useful things in there.

Your iPhone couldn't have been blocked by your service provider... If your able to enter Cydia. Ultrasn0w unlocks the iPhone not unBlock!!

The IMEI of a phone will never change, unless it's sent back to manufacturer for reconditioning.

When a phone is reported lost/stolen the IMEI is placed on the 'blacklist', this is then shared with all other UK network operators who also block the phone (max 3 months for all networks to block).

If you contact the network after finding the phone, depending on if a replacement has been sent out, they can remove the IMEI from the 'blacklist'. This allows the phone to be used again. But they will only do this if you can confirm all DPA security details.

If the phone is insured & the insurance company reports the details to the network, the IMEI will stay on the 'blacklist' as a replacement has been sent out. In the eyes of the law the 'lost' handset belongs to the insurance company. This type of behaviour is classed as insurance fraud & is being clamped down on.

The following is for information only....

In the past year there's been a huge rise in the number of people committing insurance fraud.
They have an insured high end phone & need money for a night out. They sell the phone to a shop, get the money for their night out, then report the phone lost/stolen to the insurance company... who send out a replacement.
The shop is then left with a useless phone.

But retailers are now reporting people who sell then report the phone lost/stolen. Insurance companies are very interested in punishing this trend in fraud.

                      thanks fornall the input guys.
i guess the phone wasnt blocked then, as i said it works and functions fully on all networks. just wait and see what happens then.

back to the original question then, should i upgrade the firmware etc, if so what to and where from?

still not sure about your unlock did you unlock it when you jailbroke it? or is it factory unlocked ? as this matters.
maybe u could just need another custom firmware 4.2.1 for eg
