Bought iphone 2g from ebay, wifi problem

Purchased a iphone 2g off ebay, it was jailbroken and advertised as 100% working. I tried adding my router to it which I have done on many occasions but it is not working. It is showing the three wavy lines in the left hand corner but it is not connected. I cannot even see the iphone device in my router manager.

I have clicked on my connection and l am seeing as IP address of 169.254.107.189 and 255.255.0.0

This is very strange, I would suspect my iphone to be given an address is the 192 range with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and my router address to be given too.

I tried entering the info static but not working.

Anyone that can help would be much appreciated.......

I have seen this before with certain routers and it makes no sense but how I got around it is I got the ip address for. My computer and all the other info like subnet and dns and input them manually. Just take the ip address that you take off the computer and go up like four or five numbers up for the last digit.

I entered the info statically and is now working. Please can someone tell me if I have grounds for a partial refund or to make a complaint to the seller.

Would he have known about this fault, is it even a fault and why will it not get my info dynamically.

Now that means if I visit a friends house or even a hotel I cannot connect as I will have to ask the person who works there for the ip address range, router ip and subnet, and I would just look a right dick.

        Please advise.......

Could always be just settings wrong, certainly with wifi anyway or user error,or your ip itself.
If you use wifi at someone's house and you would have to ask for password anyway..?

No this will not inter fear with other networks it will only use this info with the network you set it up for. You will still be able to connect to other networks and it will automatically use dhcp. This is something weird that may be fixed by apple latter but it has done it to me for jailborken phones and non ones. It took me a while to figure it out but it only happens with certain networks. I have no problem with all my networks except one and my phone is not jail broken. Glad it helped some of you because it drove me craze for a couple of days and I almost had my phone replaced under warranty thinking it was defective.
