Baseband is the "cellular modem firmware" that is on your iPhone. It controls the "phone radio" keeping it locked to a specific network ie it is the software that controls the phone.
Back in the day it was easy to downgrade the baseband to aid with an unlock...Apple got wise to that trick. Now days if you upgrade the baseband there's no going back.
