    found an iphone 4 but it wont work

    A couple of days ago my brother found an iphone 4. It had an o2 sim card installed but there were no reception bars showing. He inserted his own sim from his own iphone 4 which is o2 too but still same thing no reception bars. Is it possible the phone company have switched the phone off. The phone was on 4.2 firmware and he updated it to the latest 4.3.3 but still no joy. Is there anything he can do to get it working or is only useful as an ipod from now on.

    probably barred. needs to go abroad and be unlocked, go to your corner shop phone repair shop, and see if he has anyone taking them, this is what my mate does

      mark i took it to a local shop today and he said it would never work again as a phone. I decided to ask the peeps on here cos they usually give the best advice.
      I was thinking there might be a future jailbreak and possible unlock for 4.3.3 and it might work on another network, what do you think.

        can see it. the guy i know is indian, so he always knows someone going back to india, so he gives them a bag of phones and they get them sorted.

        the phone company has barred it now, so wont work here, but would do abroad.

          i've not done this with an iphone yet, but banned phones can be 'un-banned' by changing the 'burned-in' IMEI number on the phone.. (which carriers use to identify banned phones).

          Just for educational purposes of course as it's illegal to change a phone's IMEI number in UK.

          But here's some reading for you ;

              would be surprised if its possible, anything after a 2nd gen iphone cant be overwritten with ziphone. only thing you can do is list it in ebay us etc. as the handset will be functional outwith uk only requires a flash to make compatible with itunes us.

                This is old old old news....only done with 2G iPhones on really old..old firmware.. ZiPhone use to be a really big in the early days of jailbreaking...Zibri practically invented jailbreak...I do believe he was the one of the first people to "software" jailbreak the iPhone in 2008.
