I cannot access settings menu,only emergency calls and itunes icon on iphone screen,i think its locked to vodafone,so i will get a voda sim and see if that changes anything

Any voda sim..active or not....connect to iTunes to Activate...

Redsnow have an uneathered ios 5 jailbreak for the 3gs but only if you have the old bootrom. Plug your 3gs into and let it scan to find out if you have an old or new bootrom
