Anyone know how to Activate a iPhone 3g without sim card

got my old iPhone 3g back out as my new iPhone4 is not working.

started it up and its asking for sim card to activate.

but am no longer with orange, so dont have my old sim card.

i have tried a pay as you orange sim card.
but still getting message.

I tried itunes with a new sim in.
will try o2 card now

its been awhile since i used that phone an i have 2 3g's now i know this one is not the orange one..

as i type this i have a message come up saying "carrier setting update" is this ok to do? dont like updating things when its working,
