Iphone 3gs 8gb faulty ..just decided to stop operating correctly .It will go to the aps let you select sumthing then wont let you go back i think it may just be the return button but not sure..Thnx Micky

The easy answer is.... It's an Iphone.
But if everything else is working as it should, just not responding to home button presses. Then I'd be looking at the home button.
To test it, remove the two screws next to the charge port & lift the screen up a centimeter or so. The home button connects to two points on the charging block.
Top image, two copper squares with J3 written to the left of them.
If while in an app you bridge those two copper contacts the Iphone should exit the app as if the home button was pressed. If that doesn't happen I'd be looking at the connector for the charge block.
Replacing the home button does mean removing the digitizer. Not easy getting it out in one piece without lots of constant heat & loads of patience.Canker
