i phone 3gs jailbreak

i have read so much confusing info on how to jail break the 3gs, can anyone recomend the best way. I have a 3gs 3.12 (7d11) firmware 05.11.07 model mc131b, made in week 49. i dont mind upgrading to os5 if this is the best thing to do. Do i have to save anything from the phone 1st ?
will i be able to return the phone to original settings before jail break if i have to ?
Do i need to restart the phone from the computer if the battery goes flat ?

Is that 3.1.2 iOS ? . Easiest way if so is to goto. JailbreakMe.com 2.0. On your device making sure you leave phone plugged in !!!. Or use Blackra1n or spiritjb. Cheers Micky

JohnBoy is correct....none of the best Cydia tweaks will work on your 3GS on 3.1.2 or for that matter apps in the AppStore....update to 5.0.1 and jailbreak
