iPhone 4 Stuck in Restore

Guys, any suitable help is grateful. My iPhone 4 suddenly told me to 'connect to iTunes' yesterday. I have tried to 'restore' over 8 times in the last 24 hours. Sometimes it works but no signal, others 'no sim installed' etc. It is driving me mad. Spoke to Apple who said I should re-install iTunes. Tried but the problem is still there. Can anyone assist please.

Do you get any error messages..?

Have you tried putting the iPhone in DFU mode before restoring..?

Was the iPhone jailbroken...?
