Update your 3gs firmware to 5.1.1 via itunes then jailbreak using absinth 2.0.1 all the links are on here have a look for them.

Your idevices should tell you if there is an update available. The device needs to be Internet connected by wifi or 3G.
A small red number will appear over the settings icon. The update can be downloaded and installed without the need to connect to iTunes.
