iphone unlocking

i am after a bit of advice my mate as been given an iphone of his daughter as she has upgraded the iphone was orignal on orange - and my mate uses a tesco sim which i believe could be the same as 02 - but cause the iphone most be locked to orange he has been told it needs jailbreaking for it to work on his tesco sim - its this what needs doing can any body tell me and also is it something i could do my self to help cheers in advance

right as i have now been informed the phone has now been jail breaked but still wont reconise the tesco sim does any 1 have any reason for this

The reason the tesco sim won't work is because the phone is on orange and locked onto it. There is no software carrier unlock as yet for 5.1.1 firmware you will need to contact orange and ask them to do a factory unlock which they will charge you 20 pounds for. They will send you a text message when it is done and you simply connect to iTunes to unlock the phone for life.

well now what i need to know is if i contact the network it was on ie, orange will i need to have an orange sim for the iphone in it cause i have not got it any more and they are like 15 quid now as well with it being smaller sim

15 quid mate, you can buy an orange payg sim for a quid anywhere in glasgow. My advice is to put in an orange payg sim and contact orange to get it unlocked. You can tell them the number of the sim and get the cost of the unlock taken from the payg balance.

If you dont want to contact orange then have a look here but be warned its about 50 quid here.

Orange will charge ?20.49 and there cannot be any money outstanding on the contract.

I called them today for a code for mine hence how I know

There is no unlock software for the new baseband on iphone.If you have not updated it for a while(since april) with itunes you can use ultrasnow to unlock it if it is jailbroke.
