fijiman is right follow the instructions and its easy.
only problem i had was i wanted to open it to any network after jailbreak but the phone was on 3 and didn`t work.
ive been told it works with 02 tmobile and virgin. pity my iphone wasn`t one of them

Also if you need step by step instructions there look for iclarified tutorial, I think you can also do it with Pwnage Tool or RedSnow.

For future reference don't mistake a jailbreak with an unlock.....an "unlock" is reliant on the baseband software on your iPhone...

jailbreak just jailbreaks the iPhone....updating the IOS will also update the baseband....

Could you not contact 3 and pay to unlock. I did it with O2 and paid 15 quid. It is bettert han trying to do it yourself coz it will be like factory unlocked. The Iphone is too good a phone to mess with. That is my opinion.

to jailbreak, fijiman is right. use absinthe 2.0
                to unlock...
*warning* i think there's some issue on the baseband.
search for Ultrasnow and/or SAM unlockers before you jailbreak and read about it first.

some people run custom programs that requires jailbreaking. and jailbreaking isnt warranty/guarantee supported by most resellers or apple itself.
                anyways, it's just software,
if you have hardware problems just jack it in and restore from the official firmware before returning it for service.

I finally bit the bullet to update it last night, as I didnt have a cable knocking round, and it would do it via wifi.

Took about half an hour to update but then about 10 minutes to jailbreak it back via Absinithe, dead easy
