I had not jail broken my phone but installed couple of application via the method for not jail broken phones. I had a few surprises that people who have experience with jailbroken phones know but was new for me.
One was that I could not sync my phone with my computer once there was an unpurchased application. Fortunately once I removed those apps, I could resync.
The next surprise was when I was officially unlocking my phone. I thought Orange follows the same method and did all via internet (you have to phone orange first). My phone was not unlocked. I searched the forums to see why. I noticed in one of Apple answers that if the phone is jailbroken you will not get the message congratulation your phone has been unlocked.
These two problems put me off jailbreaking.

nope 2 different things, jailbreak gives you possibility to run software not approved by apple and unlock unlock phone to accept any sim card

search in cydia for unlocking it will give you specific unlocking methods... usually sw based

Regarding unlocking there is ultrasn0w on cydia that works for specific phones with specific basebands, so if you have luck you can unlock your with it.

As has been discussed a million times, there is no software based unlock for a jail broken phone in cydia or anywhere else. Itunes factory unlock from your carrier or an affiliated company is the only way.

{ 3gs iphone} i had two put my firmware on ios6 to 6.15 and unlock sim with ultrasnow. on the firmware what first was instaled whit the update ios6 it wassent posible to unlock. and put installos whith appcake.

l have 5.1 on my iphone4 and lots of apps , jailbroke ones and iblacklist , can l upgrade to 6.01.2 and keep my apps ? ie install the new jailbreak and my app will just be there and work again ?

or as its working fine just leave it ?
