It depends on your TV. If your TV has HDMI input, then you can use an adapter for HDMI. There are TV's with serial ports, like the ones we use for video projection at meetings. There is an adapter for that too. They don't include sound.
With my old 3GS I used even an adapter with yellow for video and red and white jacks for sound. All these you can buy at Apple Store or specialised shops.
The best way to watch movies however is use Apple TV. Apple TV is a small box that connects to your TV's HDMI input and you stream your movie to it using your wifi. When your iPhone 5 detects the Apple TV, you will see a triangle in a rectangle icon next to play. Clicking on that sends the movie or anything you are watching on your phone to TV.

On jailbreak there's a tweak for the hdmi to iPhone but it don't work on my 4s. Tried on the 3GS too and still the same.

Tweak called resupported4, have a try!

Without jailbreak you may watch photos and videos from camera nothing more. And most cables are not supported if they are not original.

use any cable you need, and buy app mirror 2 tv out from cydia works great and you can see on tv the entire iphone like a clone

What do you use? Is it the hdmi one or av lead from iPhone. I got a hdmi one and no apps work. I can watch my own videos tho. And pics! It's not good enough, my apps work on screen then cut out. I have tried all the mirror tweaks and display tweaks.

When I buy something, I make sure it works but if it don't, I don't give up till I know I can't do it.

Some other members on other sites say its the hdmi version I was using, I think they said I need a version 1.4 or something not 1.3.

see like i said you can only see photos and videos of your own camera.
I use a cable from iphone to 3 rca, yellow red and white..crap cable

The application TVout2 from cydia will work for you. they offer a trial to try before buying.

So go ahead and try it.

and if so dont forget to say thanks

The easier but more expensive option is to buy Apple TV.

I am using the Lightning HDMI adapter for my iPhone 5 and indeed it does support HD output with 1080p. Looks great btw However, I would not recommend buying this thing. I have seen an Apple TV at my friend's place and this device brings definitely much more value for money. If I had to choose again between a Lightning adapter and an Apple TV I would go for the latter. I found this iPhone to TV guide to be very helpful. If you want me to share more of my experience with the Lightning adapter just feel free to send me a PM.
