The cheapest unlock is the official unlock from your service provider, usually around twenty quid.
If the device is under contract they won't do it until your contract has expired. You're only other option is to goto specialist unlock companies but expect to pay between 60-100 using their services.
There is no other way to unlock currently in the uk.

I bought an iPhone 4 locked to orange (now EE) and subscribed to sim only contract for 6 months as per their website information. When I requested that they unlock it (Cost around ?20) they refused saying that only the original owner at the original address could request an unlock, even if the contract has expired and the original owner cannot be contacted. They don't tell you this on the website so the moral of the story is DON'T buy an iPhone locked to Orange, EE or TMobileComment

EE, Orange, TMobile is a nightmare to unlock Iphones from and as Johnboy1074 states it will cost around ?90 if the network will not do it for you.
As for UK3....Try activating your Iphone with a sim card other than 3 before paying for the service. Many supposedly UK3 locked Iphones have already been flagged as unlocked on Apple servers so you may well be pleasantly surprised

I would open a complaint against this provider especially if you know the contract had expired. They have no reason to keep this phone locked. Once the complaints procedure is exhausted then contact the communications ombudsman here.I bought an iPhone 4 locked to orange (now EE) and subscribed to sim only contract for 6 months as per their website information.
