bought one of these from lad in work, now he had it on 3 network, so i got a 3 sim card and put it in, but it just comes up as no service on top left corner. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Did you registered the SIM card first.? It will come up with no service if Sim not registered -
Take out the SIM card and Connect the phone to iTunes and initiate a full restore on it.
When the restore is complete, it will ask you to insert the SIM card and activate it for you.
Before you do this contact the guy you bought it from and ask him to remove the phone from his apple cloud. If you don't do this then you will be asked for his Apple ID during the restore process.
