Connect your phone to your computer, open up Itunes, let it update to 3.1.2,then download blackra1n m8,run blackrain, thats it jailbroken, run blacksnow via cydia and thats you unlocked.

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone and iPod touch using BlackRa1n for Windows.

    Follow this tutorial m8.

Have a look in your itunes folder, look for the applications, check inside to see all your apps are there, if so your good to go m8.

if you eant to back up ur stuff which you downloaded from Cydia, then iTunes won;t do that.. you Need to use Rock app, which you can find in Cydia. register with them and create a backup of your themes and repositries..

Rock app is exactly the same as Cydia but with a better looking gui, and faster downloads....

No offence but this is the worse suggestion as if he uses the iTunes way to update F/W 1st then his Baseband will change to the new one of 5.11.07 and if he then uses Blackra1n it means each time his phone powers off he has to connect to a PC to jailbreak again.

Easiest way is to use a modified PSW from PwnageTool which would not touch his Baseband and then use iTunes Shift+Restore to upgrade.

If the OP hasn't followed or touched the phone then PM me for the PSW.

You only have to re-do the Blackra1n each time if you are going to use the Tethering feature...

But I do agree with your point that upgrading from version 3.0 to 3.12 will change the baseband from 4.26 to 5.11.
& every time you upgrade the baseband, it starts to close the chances for future jailbreaking/unlocking; with each Apple update they close another unlocking hole.

Your iPhone is already unlocked & there is hardly any difference between the version 3.0 & 3.12 software upgrades, so is it really worth it, (apart from a few jailbreak holes closed)

By you saying that you have got a 3g on ver 3.0 software, then I am guessing that you have probably had the phone for over a year are, (like myself) if that is the case & you are on contract, you can get it (Legally) unlocked for free.
(?15 for pay as you go)

                      Hope this helps

I don`t understand what a baseband is but i bought my iphone bout 5 months ago from Att & yes still under contract.I had 3.1 befor i jailbroke & bought a couple of apps like skywatch that uses the 3g compass.Since jailbreaking it with 3.0 my compass will not work. im thinking its because of going back to 3.0. Thats why i want to upgrade.

The guy asked for the simplest solution to update and unlock his Iphone, and thats what I have done, I could have said look for custom firmware, install that via itunes, then run Ultrasnow once you have the custom firmware installed.
Now the guys confused as it is, whats wrong with him upgrading his baseband ? blacksnow is there to unlock the latest baseband.
I stick with my original post as this is the easiest to upgrade to 3.1.2,then use blacksnow to unlock it.

It seems like the downgrading from a 3.1 firmware & downgrading to 3.0 could be the problem, & it has probably still left it on the higher baseband anyway, not sure how the downgraders work..

So it seems like upgrading to 3.12 is the only way.

As upgrading with iTunes will clear any errors that are on there now, & Blackra1n is the easiest method.
