just got iphone

just eventually got a iphone, its a 3gs 8gb on 3.

Since i've never had one i've never looked i here, what shall i do with it?

whats all this jailbraking and whats the best method to do it?

itunes says it version 4 if that makes a difference?

soz for the noob questions people but it took me an hour and 2 phine calls to get it on charge ha ha

dont knw if you remeber me but you gave me some gud advice on a few things in the past so ill try and help you out im new to the iphone got mine 6 month ago and only just jailbroke mine last week and as most people will tell you ya will neva look back so ill get to your questions what to do with it erm well you can just enjoy it play about with it normal n pay for a few apps and get used to it or if your not already on os 4.0, if you just got your phone it might be set to 3.1.3 which mine was from what i know you cant do it if you can i never could after plenty of searching. you can check your os by going to settings, general, about, then scroll down to version mine says 4.0 (8a293) if your says say 3.1.3 just use itunes to update it . advantages of os 4.0 multi tasking, folders ( being able to put your games in a games folder utilities in a utilities folder) ah you get me by now so yeah os 4.0 it does have its advantages plus its easy to jailbreak with jailbreaking u get a handy little thing called cydia ( you even get a ikon on ya home screen ) which lets you add a few things so you can install apps so instead of ?54.99 at the a*ple app store for tom t*m u download em n use itunesto install them or use cydia just download them as if you would from app store ikon on your phone or install or installous and n yeah you guessed it more free apps and another ikon on ya screen but all free send is a pm with your email and ill send you the stuff you need and a few little treats app wise to get you going it might be in the morning tho cause im canny ~~~~ed

You need snowbreeze 1.7 I think its called to jb the phone, but another jb by spirit author will be released once 4.1 comes out, so the jb cannot be blocked by apple. You may need to be patient until then mate.

Firstly what you want to do is to check whether your 3GS is old bootrom or new bootrom. Why? If it's old bootrom, then it's ok If it's new bootrom then the jailbreak is tethered which means that you would have to plug in iphone everytyme to pc if you turned it off or battery died etc. Basically this jailbreak is for one "turn on" time... How you can check it if it's old or new? Use iDetector

iDetector-V1.0.exe

You will ask how to get it on DFU mode?
1.plug your iphone to usb and pc.
2.Turn it off.
3. Press and hold power and home buttonts at the same time for exactly 10 sec.
4. release power button, but still keep holding home button utill your pc sees new device
5. release home button, and congrats! youre on DFU mode

Now post back is it old bootrom or new bootrom

Well i think baseband means nothing now, there's unlock for all basebands on cydia

Yeah snowbreeze 1.7 which I mentioned earlier. But the actual jb is still tethered.

May be worth waiting for the new jb coming from the spirit guy, as I said, as this should then be untethered.

Biffo is the best person to speak to about this, he is the iphone guru, I am just reiterating what I have read, as mine is still on 3.1.2 with old baseband.

No m8. You did it wrong. You are on recovery mode, not DFU i think. Do you see ithunes sign when it's in that mode? If you do then it's recovery mode. DFU mode is nothing but a black screen on iphone...

Edit: ok then it's new bootrom.

If i were you i would wait for a spirit jailbreak, because tethered jailbreak sucks... Ofc if you are not on official carrier you can jailbreak and unlock if you really need but that would suck.... I mean every time you turn off your iphone you would need to connect to pc and jailbreak again to power it on

Read the tweets from musculenerd on twitter, he has stated that hes jb the new 4.0, but is awaiting 4.1 to be released before releasing the jb, so apple cannot lock it out. The present JB is only a usermode or something. Its not a proper JB.

And that is DFU mode, and definately newest bootrom!
