its an app that is added to the iphone once it is jailbroken. allows to download stuff to enhance your iphone. themes, sounds etc. its very good. also allows you to download other apps that allow you to get the premium apps. use to be illegal but.......has been made legal in the states.

Cydia's primary intention is to provide jailbroken iPhone users with software and operating system tweaks unavailable on the official iPhone App Store, most often due to technical restrictions, but also as a result of a rejection from the App Store. It works as a repository aggregator to avoid dependence on a single host and comes with a few trusted "community sources." Most stable packages are available on these repositories; however, additional ones can be easily added. This enables the iPhone development scene to stay as open as possible; anyone with a server can set up, host, manage, and update his or her own repository and share it with the community. Most of the community sources will accept package submissions, as this helps packages to gain more exposure than if it was hosted on a separate repository.

Cydia is not required to install APT packages; however, it is greatly encouraged by most users as it provides a much easier way to find, install, and manage packages.

when i add these various repos into sources,once installed and verified do i just use the search in cydia and it will automatically use these repos to find apps or do i have to go to the repos and search within them ? probably sounds a silly question but im still getting my head round this i phone
but thoroughly enjoying it unlike my missus who likens it to me having a new dick that i cant leave alone

if you add these sources they will automatically update with anything new that comes into them or you can do a search for the stuff thats already in them.
