need help for to update iphone

hello all members, i bay an iphone 3g 16g and i need help how to upgrade a firmware , in my phone she had this version 3.1.2(7d11) in the net i found the new version 4.1(8b117) and i read in the net (ios4.1)what does means ?
and i want to know can i upgrad it with itunes whithout any probleme .
please can someone help me ,i 'm lost
for every one how read this message i need a help step by step how to do

open i tunes plug phone in
i tunes will detect that you have old firmware and will tell you to upgrade to latest firmware by clicking on the button
if thats what you want to do then click on the button and i tunes will update your phone to the latest firmware version
if you are thinking of jailbreaking you phone then do not update to the latest version
post another message and somebody will point you in the right direction
