Do I need itunes?

I recently got a jailbroke ipodtouch 2g with 2.2.1 firmware. I downloaded and installed a couple of games directly with installous and would like to install some games/apps from my pc.
Whats the best way to go about this,if I use itunes should I have the latest version and will it keep trying to update the ipod
Also I want to put some mp3 and vids on the ipod-do I really need itunes
Is a wifi connection a good idea
I'm a complete noob so any advice appreciated

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will help you, but I have iTunes and it updates automatically, I find iTunes OK for burning but to be honest there are much better players.

I use Winamp and VLC for most stuff.

Try using CopyTrans suite its better than itunes
