thanks for that, it turns out its a g2, and its model is MC086 but that still doesn't explain why when i open the firmware file for the g2, there is no .ipsw file in there!

I dont know what your downloading, but I have checked this file and its an ipsw. Its the 2g version for a touch, and its 3.1.2.

I have downloaded the file myself, and can confirm its an IPSW.

I've managed to get it cracked, Fijiman posted a link to the same greenpois0n that i downloaded on sunday, i figured that it couldn't hurt to give it another try and it worked just fine

sounds like windows is seeing as a zip file
you need to go to folder options view and uncheck
hide extensions for known file types
see pic
then right click and delete .zip from the file name
