My imac sometimes has issues with burnt CDs. Is it only CD-Rs you have trouble reading or can it be regular (bought) CDs as well? The first super basic tip is to make sure the CD you're trying with is clean and unscratched. Does the same CD work in other computers/drives?

As for booting from a USB connected drive I know that at least the intel macs can boot from a USB connected hard drive so this should work as well. What kind of imac do you have? (how old?)

you can boot any mac G4 onwards from a external Usb or Firewire drive.

just hold the ALT button on startup..

What type of mac do you have ? I could give you some tips an what to do to fix the drive.
(I work in a AASP, so know a few tricks or two ;-) )
