What software is needed to run an original R4 card on a 3DS

There are many kinds of R4 3DS cards in the market. Each flashcard use it's own kernel. You can check the official website printed on the card.

If you have an original R4 Card that ran on your DS lite, it will NOT work on a DS i or 3DS Simply because the firmwares on those systems block the card from booting. I suggest you look into something like a R4i Gold, Acekard 2i, Supercard DSTWO, etc... You need a flash cart that can update the card it self, so that it can bypass the system firmare.
