iv just bought my son a 3ds brand new and i heard people talking about some kind of card that i can put in it and it stores lots of games (save me a fortune) so can anyone advise where i start on this card think its called r4 or something many thanks im in the uk

yep, you buy an r4 card and stick in a microsd card to store the games.. stick r4 in game slot and away you go.. instructions on firmware to place on r4 will come with it
