to update or not update firmware

hi, i am new to the forum and new to dsi xl although i am famililiar with dslite. i have a dsi on firmware 1.4.e. it has never been updated. i want to enable it to play homebrew ,music ,movies,etc. i would like to now if i should leave the console on ver.1.4 or update it. i have recently purcased a r4i card but not yet recieved it. i just want to be ready when it arrives. i have downloaded the files and have media to put on it. all i need to know is should i update firmware from 1.4 or leave wll alone.

Never update the sole propose of ninty updates on ds are to block flash cards

don't update,
the older the console firmware gives you a better chance of card working in it...

Welcome to the forum mate my advice is start at the bottom and work your way up from there keeping the status quo any problems then work up to new software and formatting etc any problems we will walk you thru it
