Complete noob with ds lite r4

Hi guys,
I have been given an r4 card for my daughters ds lite i was told i need a micro sd card and have recycled a 2gig one from my phone.
question is what next, i have some roms but am unsure how to progress re firmware?? is it on the R4 or the micro sd?
whats the file structure on the card etc. I have tried searching but get bogged down with 3ds results.
i'm not usually this dumb i have soft modded my wii in the past but this bloody r4 is doing my nut in

In download section you will find Wood R4 firmware, try the latest version that is there. Digital Kaos - Downloads - DS

Format sd card
Extract wood firmware to root of sd card
Make a folder called game on root of sd card (you don't need to make one but keeps things tidy.
Put extracted games in games folder.

Put sd card in ds and turn on...hopefully all is working.

If it doesnt work, it may be because you have a cloned r4 card but there is some firmware about for clones aswell.

Done all of that stupid thing just says loading.
is there any way of telling if the card is a clone.

Try different versions of firmware, seen a few posts lately were members are having loading problems.

I've done some digging &worked out its a R4sdhc so so downloaded the latest firmware 1.34 from Welcome to R4SDHC.COM -Revolution for NDSi/NDSL/NDS and all is well.
one quick question if i may. I gather that the R4sdhc is not compatible with woods 1.40b am i missing something by not having a card that is supported by that firmware?

Not sure as I dont have an sdhc, wood firmware made it easy for us and we didnt have to constantly patch games.

There is a wood firmware 1.42 for sdhc cards.
