No update button on r4i cards

Hi, I'm hoping for some help please.

I have 2 cards and both no longer work on my 1.4.3E DSi - they both come up with the same error message "an error has occured. Press and hold POWER Button to turn the system off. Please refer to the Nintendo DSi Operations Manual for details."

After days and days off googling around I've come to the conclusion that my DSi has firmware which is too new for the r4i cards and I must use a second DS (a DS lite) with older firmware to update the cards in order for them to work again - can someone please confirm if this is true?

I've acquired a DS lite to update the cards but on both cards, I'm unable to update the cards simply because I can't find the update button.

The first card is a black card with a red sticker on it, it's an R4i SDHC card V2.0 - the website for this one is R4 cards - Nintendo ds r4 - R4i sdhc Official website - please note there is no hyphen in this weblink, unlike the popular r4i-sdhc .com website that is linked to quite frequently.

The second card is a green card with a green sticker, it says R4 (small i) 3D card, there is a 'wifi' logo above where it says R4. The website for this card is R4i Ndsill Revolution for NDSi/NDSL/NDS

The first card that I linked to seems to be more familiar to what I've seen. When the menu loads there are 3 buttons, the 3rd one being the settings but there is no update button. Where as the second card doesn't seem to have a settings button, the 3rd button in the menu takes you to the skype app, msn app, email app etc....

All I've basically done to get this far is download the most up to date files from the websites, formatted the SD card, load the files to the root of the SD card and then put the SD card into the r4i card and off we go....

Any help would be massively appreciated

    the first card.

i'm not sure if card can run on a dsi 1.4.3.
you need to follow these instructions using this file.

    r4-card-firmware-steps - R4,R4i-R4isdhc the beta r4 card

its unclear wether the card will upgrade for 1.4.2 or 1.4.3....

    the second card.

looks like the newer cards from this site can be upgraded to 1.4.3

    download this file:
    http://www.ndsill.net/iLL3DS30_3194.rar

extract it and you should find a .nds file.
put it on sd card along with cards firmware
put in dslite and startup card.
the upgrade file will show up like a game.

start the file like a normal game and follow on screen instructions.

if your card can be upgraded then it will upgrade, make sure you have the charger connected and delete the upgrade file when finished....
possibility this could damage your card, so do at your own risk..

let us know how ytou get on.

Many thanks for the response. One problem though! I didn't think to ask to borrow the charger for the DS Lite and it takes a different charger to the DSi - how essential is having it plugged in? I think the battery is full and I assumed updating the cards would be a one minute process.

Should I continue without the charger or should I try and obtain a charger from somewhere? The person I borrowed the DS Lite off lives about 2 and a half hours drive away so I won't be seeing them again for some time....

if you are sure battery full then it will be ok.

if the power fails duiring update then the cards are useless..

Update - I've carried out the instructions successfully (I think) on the first card (black card with red sticker) - now I'm about to ask a stupid question (again). What files must I put onto the micro SD card in order for it to work normally on the DSi? Has the download to these files been linked to already in this thread? (i.e the one you posted initially, barrowmanandrew?)

Also, in regards to the update of the second R4 card, you've states I must add the game to the cards normal firmware in order to update it, could you please let me know which firmware it is that I need for that particular card?

Also if you could let me know which firmware I need for the first card too that would be absolutely brilliant.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

no, i said the update file that i posted will show up like a game,
you need to to start the file like you would a game to trigger the update.

you already must have correct fimrware if cards are working on dslite's..

Yes you're right I did already have the firmware - I was over complicatin things in my head. I have updated the first card and can confirm it's working well (the wife has already put a bunch of games on and won't be bothering me for the rest of the evenin atleast).

I'll leave updating the second one until I find another micro SD card for it as I've already loaded the firmware plus a bunch of games onto the first R4 card.

Many thanks for your help on this matter, it's much appreciated.

just backup the whole card and get it done .

be interested to know if it works..

tbh i thought the first card was the least likley to work..

I'll wait for the second card because while the first card was updating the light on the DS lite went red (as if to say the battery was low). My heart literally stopped beating because it was a race for the card to update and the DS to switch off. It was the longest 10 seconds of my life.

Slightly bizarre though cus when I switch it on now the battery shows full and the light stays green. Perhaps it only changed to red while the card was updating?

I don't think I'll risk it shutting down while updating the second card.

Once I've updated the second card I'll post back and let you know how I get on.

                    Thanks again.
