newbie obviously doing something basically wrong

I've tried reading the other threads that relate to this but I guess I must be some kind of special remedial case and missing something glaringly obvious. If any of this sounds lame bear with me as this is a present we nought for our son last month and I know pretty much nothing about ds's.

got hold of an R4i sdhc v1.4.1 R4I sdhc upgrade revolution for DS (NDSI XL/NDSi/NDSL/NDS)

also coupled it with a 4gb micro sd card (R4i says works with 4gb-32gb)

Tried reading up as much as I could to try and avoid being the author of one of these "what am I doing wrong ?" threads (that worked - not)

This is everything I've done so far to try and get it to work

    1. Formatted SD card in fat 32
    2. downloaded v1.59b version of r4i kernel (twice different sources to rule out possibility of one being corrupt.
    3. Extracted kernel and draged and dropped to SD card. My sd card now has one folder called R4i V1.59b English, in this folder are 3 subfolders, moonmemo, moonshl2 and R4iMenu as well as another file called R4.
    4. Downloaded several ds games all with .nds suffixes. Dragged and dropped these onto sd card, both outside the R4i V1.59b English folder and also inside after the first idea didn't work.
    5. on powering up ds a logo appears for Alex Rider Stormbreaker THQ (apparently this is bona fide and is a game name chosen at random to make the ds think a valid game card is installed). When I click the start menu on this icon, the lower screen goes white and the upper displays MENU? in red text on a white background.
    6. Have also tried changing the date to 01/01/2010 as someone else on this forum suggested on a previous thread. all to no avail

What glaringly obvious solution am i missing or, more likely what stupid action am i performing that is rendering this unworkable?

okay, further to above post I carried on hunting for further threads. Got another one that suggested using different kernel so got the http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo...9c_English.rar 1 recommended there, new outcome is that i get a R4 R4i SDHC Revolution for NDSi/NDSL/NDS R4i Cards R4 Cards loading screen on a black background that just hangs

    Any suggestions

      r4

you should have 4 files on your card ,open the r4i english folder on the desktop, then drag the 4 files 1 by 1 to your card,
      moonmemo
      moonshl2
      R4iMenu
      R4.dat
The firmware with the white backround and red menu is prob. wrong for your particular card!!!
Just keep trying diff firmware, format between tries.
You will get it eventually ,there are many diff clones of the r4 card
Sons one used r4i V1.55b english from r4dotcodotuk

some have a folder named 'games' put roms in this folder
other ones don't have a folder ,just put roms straight to card ,NOT inside any folder ,
Also make sure rom is .nds not .n5s or similar

If you get some sort of date error ,then just change the date a year or so back!!

Also try some older games first ,some newer ones are a nightmare to get working

would just like to take a minute to thank cl8. The firmware version you came up with was the one i needed (v1.55) I had been doing everything else pretty much spot on just not landed on the right firmware. Thanks for that, much appreciated
