It depends.

It depends on which kind of r4 cards you use. There are many kinds of r4 cards. R4i gold is the most popular and powerful one. It suits all 3ds/dsi ll/dsi xl/dsi/ds and all versions. If the r4 card you use is too out of time, it may not support the latest console version.
