Any knowledgable folk know if R4i sdhc ver1.4.3 is backward compatible?

Have been browsing the forum on my 'smartphone' best I can but can't fond an answer to this one!

Friend has 2kids with DSi's and two identical R4i SDHC ver 1.4.3s

One DSI is on FW 1.4.3 and runs the card without a problem, other than when you select multimedia from r4i menu it briefly flashes an errorpage (dldi patches and roms?) but then loads multimedia menu tree.

The other DSIshows FW 1.4.1, this one freezes on selecting multimedia showing the same error described above and never gets past it? Would an older 1.4.1cart work better? I have tried swapping around carts, Memory cards, reformatted, different r4i software versions. I cannot find anyone with an older dsi FW to upgrade wirelessly.

I would have thought and have seen no indication otherwise that this Cart would work in that DSI? The lad reckons he may have connected wirelessly so is it possible the DSI is blocking the cart even tho he FW doesn't show as updated? Sorry for long post but have spent several hours on this bloghter now!

you cannot alter the ds/dsi fimrware, only use cards that are compatable..

I know you can't change the firmware except officially and to the latest version, I was more surprised by the fact the cart is less functional in an older version of the firmware that is supposedly supported by this cart.

I tried 3 different kernels on the cart, 1.43 1.50 and 1.64. I may instead update the DS fully as I suspect it has got partway through an update then get a card that supports FW 1.4.5, just worried that the newer cart may be no more successful.

1.45 is pretty new. Have cards been updated to that fw yet?

Have you updated the firmware on the card? If you install the latest kernel software, then go to r4i>config>update, it will update the card to 1.44. This might help?

Afaik some cards will run on 1.4.5, I have a list at home, at work atm.. when I tried upgrading it said something about the r4i menu file, I can't remember what. My confusion is more about the 1.4.1 not properly working with either card yet both work in 1.4.3. Very odd. The games icon will work on both of them so mostly successful but the multimedia icon freezing is annoying me, I like to try to finish a job off! Except at work perhaps..

Fair enough. If you're not in too much of a hurry though, you could wait until 1.4.5 is patched by r4i-sdhc, then update both consoles (after upgrading the cards firmware to the same of course - definitely not after (as I found out)) to see if that works.
I was told by the manufacturers that my card marked 1.4 couldn't be updated to 1.4.4, but sure enough it updated easily and works a treat. I suppose it's a ploy to get older card owners to buy new?
