It depends on how old your Wii is and I don't mean the system version number 4.3 as that can be upgraded online. In the later Wii's they fitted d3-2 DVD drives which stopped you from playing burnt games. It much easier and cheaper to use an external USB hard drive as once you've found a compatible drive job done you don't have to keep buying DVD's to burn games.
If it is a 4.3 then you can use LetterBomb then you won't have to buy or borrow a game disc to softmod it. LetterBomb will only softmod you need to get additional files and wads to use an external USB drive all those guides are on here.
After you have softmodded your Wii a good thing to have on your SD card is syscheck which shows a report of all IOS's in your Wii and it will tell you if your DVD drive supports burnt games.
Start up your Wii and click on the round Wii Options button bottom left. Click on Wii Settings the spanner on the right and the current system version will be show in the top right.
Well if your not running 4.3 and your Wii is connected to the web go back to Wii Settings and move along to page 3 and click Wii System Update to download and installed 4.3 then you can use LetterBomb.
If you don't want to update to 4.3 then you going to need one of the original game discs to softmod it.
If you are running 4.3 just follow the instructions on the LetterBomb site just to softmod your Wii.
What LetterBomb doesn't tell you you have 3 options in the HBC installer.
Install Homebrew
Install BootMii on boot2 or IOS but if your on 4.3 there won't be boot2 shown.
Prepare SD card - this puts the [BootMii] folder on the SD card so you can run BootMii to backup your NAND this part is very important and you must do it to prevent bricking your Wii just in case you install the wrong things later.

Reason: Update
Keith will you please stop telling newbies they need a game to softmod a wii that is not on 4.3. This has not been the case for a very long time. System update 4.3 was specifically released to block the banner bomb hack (no game required) but since you found the letter bomb hack no game is needed to hack any wii system version.
