A question about Wii disc drives.

I have a GC2-D3 drive, I would like to know if my Wii is capable of playing burned backups of games, because I need to fix my USB drives, they aren't working. When I try to play a DVD to test I get error -2, does anybody know what this means?

Well the GC2-D3 drives listed in Wii Drive Chip Database are mainly 2006 models so it should play burnt discs. Type your serial number in there.

I'm not sure if a Wii will play a DVD straight off without WiiMC or MPlayer CE.

      What version is your Wii?

I had the same problem with my Black 4.3E Wii. I think Black Wii won't load burnt disc. I've tried all these on a White Wii with same version - it's Perfect through NeoGamma R8.

Hope I didn't misinterprete as I myself I have acquired from these outstanding Guys!!!

Correct this is what wikipedia says about the Wii console.

The disc reader of the Wii does not play DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, or compact discs. A 2006 announcement had stated a new version of the Wii capable of DVD-Video playback would be released in 2007; however Nintendo delayed its release to focus on producing the original console to meet demand. Nintendo's initial announcement stated that it "requires more than a firmware upgrade" to implement and that the functionality could not be made available as an upgrade option for the existing Wii model. Despite this assertion, third parties have used Wii homebrew to add DVD playback to the original unmodified Wii units. The Wii also can be hacked to enable an owner to use the console for other activities than those intended by Nintendo. Several brands of modchips are available for the Wii.

The black Wii came out in 2009 as the above link says. It appears they made a black Wii Family Edition to be released on October 23, 2011.
