softmod error

totally new to the world of softmod my nephew did a soft mod on my wii the problem we have is it wont read the usb stick or any disks the usb freezes and the disk problem coming up is drive to new any help would be helpful as ive heard you can brick a wii and turn it into a very big doorstop

If the wii is newer than 2009 it cannot read dvdr so you can only use usb. Make sure whatever you are using is in the correct format with at least 1 game on it and plugged into the usb port nearest the edge of the console
