I believe you can softmod a chipped Wii without the chip effecting anything so do it.

What version number are you using as you may as well update it to 4.3 and start from there?

You can softmod a chipped wii but do not update with nintendo first. Use modmii and select full softmod wizard input your version number then choose 4.1 or 4.3 as your preffered version to be on after softmod. This will update all the system ios safely. Follow the tutorial that is written for you and use the files that are downloaded and you should have no problems.
