If the games asking you to update for multiplayer are cod then the updates are game updates not system updates and are safe, they area also required for online play as you have found out. I am having to second guess you as you haven't included the names of the games you are having trouble with

Mario Kart Black is a modded version of mario kart wii by roobix over on wiiso and is not an official ninty release as far as I can see so make up your own mind as to whether or not you think it's safe to update but I would assume it's not going to update your system menu if it has been created by a modder

It stops users just downloading what they want then you never see them again and no one gets any thanks for what they have freely uploaded for forum users, don't be selfish.
