Looking for a compatible USB Hard Drive

    Hi Guys,

I have read through the list of compatible hard drives on the gbatemp website, however I am having trouble buying the same ones (have searched for a variety of 1TB and 500GB options from the link).

Has anybody bought a recent external hard disk drive for their Wii?

Ideally I would like a 1TB USB powered drive then automatically powers up as per the Wii power status.

    Thanks

I bought 2 of these drives to be used on a Wii and they work perfectly. Seagate 1TB FreeAgent? GoFlex***8482; Desk External Hard Drive

There is another compatibility list but you have to join to read it.

Thanks Keith - will take a look at the other list.

The Seagate looks good, apart for the need for an external power source.

      Thanks

Well an external mains powered drive is better which you say you've bought as there is no lag time while loading.

So how long as it been softmodded?

Do you want to post a sysCheck19 report as intructed in that link so I can see which wads have been installed?

              Hi Keith,

Yes I used ModMii to softmod, so I have the homebrew channel etc. (Think I did this on the 22/09/13)

Picked up the hard drive after work, formatted to FAT32 (came as NTFS) copied some files on to there for CFG USB Loader and connected it to the Wii - works like a dream!!

I have tested both CFG and GX, I prefer the GUI of GX, now just need to install the Channel rather than a forwarder or having to enter HBC in order to load GX.

I think CFG also runs off the HDD, so would ideally like to get a channel for that too, so that I only have backups on the HDD - is that possible?

Just to confirm, the HDD I got was a WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive - 1TB, Black Model: WDBBEP0010BBK-EESN (which was a confirmed HDD as per above link).

Very happy with the result, can backup my games, and pack the discs away

              Thanks

I haven't tried running the USB files from an HDD as mine is formatted WBFS.

You would have to choose the HDD from Homebrew then put all files in the correct folders. I would have thought the normal Forwarder Channel would work its like a Windows short-cut it just tells it where to look for the files, Homebrew will tell it to use then HDD.

It depends how your friends drive is formatted, FAT32 or NTFS you would just copy the files over to your drive in the games folder.

I have placed the USB loader (CFG and GX) in the apps folder on the USB HDD, however HBC does not pick them up, it only seems to look within the SD Card (the file paths are identical apart from the drive letter of course). Is there a way to get HBC to read the HDD?

I tried to install the channel for GX using MMM, however the installation failed - not sure why, here is where I got the channel from:

USBLoaderGX_v3.0_IOS249.wad - usbloader-gui - USB Loader GX v3.0 WAD Channel (UNLR) (boot IOS 249) - USB Loader GX: GUI for Waninkoko?s USB Loader (based on libwiigui) - Google Project Hosting

Any reason why that shouldn't install?

Also how can I replace the Disc Channel with the USB Forwarder channel? (In Priiloader I have enabled "move disc channel")

                    Thanks

Remove any SD cards and plug in your drive. Start HBC and you will see only bubbles. If you press the 1 button you will see the options, because there is no SD card inserted the Internal SD Slot won't be enabled but the USB Device should be, what happens if you click it?

What happens when you try to unstall USBLoaderGX_v3.0_IOS249.wad with MMM does it say Installed OK afterwards?

If you install USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder_5_1_AHBPROT.wad does that work?

                        Will try that tonight thanks.

With regards to the WADs, can't recall the exact text, something like "1 File not installed". This is for both WADs, both downloaded from the link above.

Also I already have a forwarder channel, but want an actual channel (just to be clear).

                        Thanks

What are you using to install wads?

I only find that Multi-Mod-Manager (MMM) v13.4 works for me.

If wads don't install the first time just keep on trying them.

I have been trying to install the WADS with Multi-Mod-Manager (MMM).

It installed all the WADs with MMM when softmodding so I am not sure what it going on!

Will try it some more, but I have tried multiple time.

So no success on the installation of the WADs...no biggie on tbh.

Is there a way to save the covers of games downloaded via GX to the USB HDD rather than the SD card? I have tried to change the path in settings, however it says "cannot create path". Do I have to manually create the folder via my PC?

                              Thanks
