wii update

hi
i have a wii key fitted to my wii is it ok to do a firmware up date from my wii menu as some game will not play with the firmware i currently have on my wii, i have look in the menu and when you go to update it itsays this could stop the mod key from working. the firm ware i want to update to is version 4 i think
