alt.dol where do i get it and how to use it

hi just wondered if anyone could help i am getting a few games on my hd loader that just reset my wii back to the start menu when i try to play them
have looked about the internet for a solution but still no luck apart from this alt.dol thing so just have a few questions
1.where do i get it from have tried google but cant seem to find it only a few dead links
2.if i do get it how do i get to use it
3.can the same alt.dol file do all the games with this prob or do you need a different one for each game

also when trying to install new games on the hd through the wii and usb loader gx on a few games it just freezes half way through installing then the system crashes and i get aload of numbers on the screen then i have to turn the wii off at the wall

    many thanks

      OK here we go....

.dol files are executables for the Wii. They are essentially the way to start the game.
Some games, like Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, only display a startup screen and then load another executable, but this breaks the USB hack.
By choosing an alternative .dol, we are starting the game up immediately from the desired point so that it works as long as it never tries to load another .dol file again (most games don't).

Some Wii games reload a different executable file at some point throughout the game. This eliminates the hook to the hard drive and the game will crash. To get these games working, you can load the file needed by the game directly instead of loading the normal game. Some of the games that require this are Fate of Atlantis included in Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, compilation packs like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Armageddon and the MotionPlus tutorial videos found in MotionPlus games (e.g., Wii Sports Resort).

In the newest loaders there is an option to use alt.dols. In the case of Configuratble USB Loader (which is the best USB Loader IMO)....

      1. Select your game and push 1 to enter the options screen
      2. Go to the "Alternative dol" and select Disc with the D-pad
      3. Press 2 to save options if you like
      4. Press A to start game
      5. Configurable will ask you to "Select alternative .dol"
      6. You need to select a .dol that is not main.dol with the D-pad
      7. Push A when done to play the game

I cant decribe how to do it on other loaders as I dont use any other for my USB Drive. I use Neogamma only for disk loading.

The loader finds the dols for you in the WBFS file. Nothing to download and put in folders.

gotcha - so it just looks for the other dol. *penny drops*

couldn't get SSX to run and saw it needed the alt.dol but never went further than that.

Yep the alt dols are included in the games. You only need to download if they need to be patched first, like in the case of NSMB (for some users).

              In Configurable USB loader....

If you go to the cfg usb settings for that game. Scroll down to the setting that says Alt dol [1found]
push right until it says ssx.dol (ie. not main.dol)
              run the game

SSX and Red Steel both work fine this way, but not by using the default main.dol.

This setting then can be saved on a game by game basis, so you dont have to do it every time you want to play.

I hope the new Silent Hill isn't a pain in the arse like SSX is, that's the one game I couldn't get working - not bothered about it now though ~~~~ it .....I'll cry if Silent Hill reboots my Wii after I give it the alt.dol, convert to PAL etc etc.

What drive are you using m8. Some drives have a spin down feature which causes them to not play nice with the wii.

Westeren digital are considered to be rock solid on the wii.

Do you have more than 500 games on the drive? And what loader are you using. Some loaders wont support more than 500 files on a hard drive.
