Can I Mod the Black Wii?

I've recently been told that i cant softmod the new black wii which would be unfortunate as i have one. can anyone tell me if what i have been told is true?

If I can softmod the black wii wich is going to be the best softmod to follow so i can play backup's & downloaded games

    Thanks

I think that you can only play game, using the usb loader and an ext harddrive

so I can use a softmod to a degree? ... Which one would be best to use.
I have a number of external drives so that in itself wouldnt be a problem.

What firmware version are you running m8?
If 4.2E use the easy to follow tutorial.

This one is brand new so I haven't figured that out yet. I was gonna just connect up and let it update to the latest firmware. I'm a real newbie with the WII so I don't even know where to find the firmware version

When you turn on you Wii, at the bottom of the screen you will find a button with "Wii" written on it. Click on that, then click on Settings and it should show up on the top right with something like 4.1, and depending on where in the world you are, it'll have something like 4.1E, or 4.1J
