So partition the external drive with one part for the games and another fat32 partition with movies, music etc and mplayer will read them from the fat32?

i had a similar prob with my sony tv when trying to play films from a external hdd, i found that the tv wouldnt read ntfs, i had to format the hdd to fat32, it could be that the format of the films you have downloaded cant be read by the tv, look in your tv user manual to see what format of films your tv will read, my tv will only play certain formats of films.
