I want to use USB loader - currently on 3.3E - advice please

I haven't used the Wii for a while but after having a clearout, I want to put all my games on a USb Hard Drive and put them in the loft.
The wii is from 2007 and is hard modded ( I think with a WiiKey) and I currently have Homebrew Channel installed (although I've never used it)
Now, if I get back into it and want to play the newer games, I guess that 3.3E is going to be too old and I'll need to update.
So question is, do I update to the ;latest (is it 4.2E) then follow the tutorials, or is there a better way of doing it for me?
