Wii Noob looking for info on softmod

I have read some of the info regarding softmoding and I am sure that it will go fine. I am at work so I dont know what firmware version I have. On some forums it says that a softmod could be bricked by some of the firmware updates and you should have backed up some files first to be able to restore them?

So the question I have is:

How do I minimise the risk with softmodding or is chipping the way to go. I will be comfortable with either.

Do I need a HD loader to get an external HD to work to boot ISO.

If I get a backup ISO do you have to patch an ISO for a region or any other other reason or will it work as is for all regions / pal / ntsc etc. Any other info for competent noobs?

never heard of anybody bricking there wii while modding it,you can make a backup after,a hd loader will come with the mod,you can patch a iso for multi region, but you can normally play them without any problems

your not wrong but preloader is better, but cannot be installed on all system menus as there is no system hacks for all menus,
