yes your correct newer wii's can be chipped but there just about useless because of the new chipset which will not allow dvd backups to play.
the best betis softmodding and a hdd.
iv'e never heard of anybody bricking a wiii while softmoding you should be fine.

can you recomend a softmod install thats fairly strait forward, does the job with little fuss? the bits i read seem to suggest that files need to be swapped / updated on a regular basis?
i suppose a solution that simply plays backups on any wii and fimware to date would be ideal/sufficient, to explain the other options and software to others is numbing!

Chipping a new wii is far from useless.

You can use a drive emulator like a flatmii or flatmii fusion which sits between the DVD drive and the motherboard on the drive ribbon.

If you use a flatmii you hook the wii up to a pc via a usb cable and load isos directly off the pc, or with the fusion type chips you copy isos onto a SD card and load them off that.

For people who don't really know what they're doing with softmods it's a far safer option.

When I mod other peoples wiis I always use a chip as I don't want to update the softmod every time a new game comes out.

Also useful for when the dvd drives go tits.

ghost2fitter have some flatmiis in at the mo. Having bought other chips off them I can confirm they're service is excellent. Go to www.flatmii.com for the latest iso loading software and drivers. If you're using a pc with Vista or Windows 7 you will need to put windows in test mode in order to load the unsigned drivers.

Wii-chip.co.uk have the wiikey fusion for sale for under ?30, and having bought other chips off them I can confirm they're service is excellent.

Futura Videogames have the flatmii fusion in stock, but I've never bought off them so I can't say what they're customer service is like.

I've put dseo13b in the download section, good software for putting windows vista and 7 into test mode

as i said just about useless, loading games from a sd card great, 32gig is the largest the wii will recognise, and loading games from a pc is not conveinient, softmod it and put your ?30 to a 500gig hdd,as for updating evertime a game comes out, thats not correct, perhaps once a year.

new red / black and white wii's will all need hdd's to play backups

ck-ok's right, best link for soft modding and general wii info is wiihacks.com.

As far as I know the new wiis all work with drive emulator chips, but not clip on or solder chips due to new dvd drives.

If you want to play backups from other regions i.e US, Jap or Korea, you need to have firmware version 4.1 for the chips to bypass region checks. Newer wii's cant be downgraded.

I'm fairly certain softmodding will still allow other region loading via the homebrew USB loader
