Can new wii's still be soft modded

Not done a wii for over a year and was wondering if the new wii's in the shops are still soft moddable.
I know the black ones dont play back ups via the drive but was wondering if the white ones can still be soft modded. Mates getting one for his kid and asked me to do it for him.

You might get lucky and get a 4.2 from shopstock and use the sticky for 4.2 to mod your wii.
Youll still be able to do 4.3 as Red says....if you get the black wii just use the usb port and attach external HDD and not the disc drive for games .

From what I've read all wii's from about the middle of 2009 have the same drive that doesn't read dvd r whether they are black or white but they all run with hdd as said above and you will have more success with the games using a configurable loader plus the fact that the games do run better from an hdd especially online.

As long as Nintendo haven't released another version after 4.3 every wii can be modded for hdd. They are easier on 4.2 and under but using Indiana Pawns 4.3 can be modded.

This is a copy & paste job m8.

If you got a DVD drive with one of the newer D3-v2 or D4 chips you won't be able to play any burned dvd (game or movie), only retail Wii and GC games will run on your console (all red/black and recently bought Wiis will have one of those chips).
You got one? Go for a softmodding USB loading route.

The only way to find out apparently, is to open it up or just try back ups to see if they work.

There is a link somewhere that will tell you what drive you have by looking at the code on the underside of the wii and as far as the one you got from argos it was probably the earlier version and no doubt there are still some early versions with the old drive knocking about. I suppose it depends on how good the warehouse staff are at stock rotation. But nowadays there is no guarantee that the wii you buy will be able to play dvd r regardless of colour.
