    Thinking of getting a Wii

    Hello All,

I am thinking of getting a Wii for the kids. I am getting a 2nd hand one as I want it cheap so it can be modded and I can then download the files?

Is there anything I need to look for, is there a certain type of Wii that cannot be modded, or should I just get one and away we go?

I also have a Network Attached Storage Device, will my Wii be able to pick the games up from that or will it have to be a hard drive, or do you copy them to DVD... Really noob questions.

    THanks.

    FP.

the best way to play backups (in my opinion) is via a harddrive.
you can pick up a 1tb hd for around 60 quid these days that works fine.

      as for playing backups.

new black and red wii's are unable to play dvd backups, but you can use dvd backups fore older white wii's. (i think some newer white wii's cant play backups either).

which version wii you have will determine what you need to do the softmod.

if you can pick up a cheap copy of either
      lego indy jones original adventures
      lego batman
      lego star wars

then you will have no probs as they can be used to mod the newest 4.3 wii's.

You won't need anygames to mod wii if you follow step by step instructions on 2 sites I mentioned earlier as I have done 4.3 wii without using a game but hard drive is a must saves time and space, plus you can back up all your existing games on to it as well

barrowman's spot on as usual. You'll need one of the game exploit's that were mentioned if the f/w is 4.3. Usb loader's are the only way to go, and are cool too.

Well that sounds good, as I have a 2.5" 1tb WD Scorpio Drive doing nothing at the moment. Just get an external case for it then. Get a cheapo 2nd hand Wii from some auction site, and away we go.

I have found using an external drive without it's own power doesn't work too well go for a seagate

that old chestnut again at this time there is no way of modding a virgin 4.3 without a formentioned game.

Before you go buying anything look here USB Devices Compatibility List - WikiTemp and iyou will find all the info you need as some enclosers don't work as well as others. All the enclosures are way down at the bottom.

perhaps you could write a tut on how to do this without the games, or at least how to put the home brew channel on.....

i belive the problems with incompatable drives is down to power consumption, as long as your h/d has its own power supply it should be ok.

yes black wii's can be modded, but they cant read dvd backups unless you swop the drive for an older drive

Here is a VERY easy tutorial to follow in order to softmod your Wii. It shows you the various ways to do it as well. (I used the Super Smash Brothers hack)

                              4.3 SoftMod Guide

Hope you can find that useful
