PS3 3.41 firmware

I have a ps3 with firmware 3.41 and wondering about jailbreaking.
Is it just a case of updating the pup file?
What's the best/latest uk version?
Are there any benefits apart from backups?
Last question do backups only play from internal/external hdd?

The idea is to save wearing out my expensive games when the grandkids want to play. They've scratched some beyond repair and they aren't cheap.

Backups can be run from the external drive if the original game disk is less than 4GB in size. Nearly all game backups will run ok from the PS3 HDD. Nearly every game out can be downloaded if you're that way inclined but that of course is illegal!

To find out all you want to know about the whole scene go to google and type 'ps3iso' - the first site on the list.

Jailbreak involves buying a dongle or similar - now 'backing up' can be done with software.
Be sure you don't try to update your software from 3.41 unless you're 100% certain about it.
Check out that site and have a good read.

Hi - I'm new to all this stuff so sorry if this sounds a bit stupid but please bear with me:
i'm currently on 3.50 (I just got a new ps3 last week, updated it when first switched on and then started reading up about it. Don't know why system didn't upgrade to current 3.66 !). My question is this: can I legitimately upgrade to 3.55 and stop there. I haven't decided to JB yet as i only have the PS3 a week and haven't had a good look at PSN

Yes, you can legitimately upgrade to 3.55 official firmware- but you still wont be able to access PSN, or play any new games that require 3.56+.

Not 100% accurate.

PS3 games that are well above 4gb in size can still be played from an external HDD as long as there isnt any indevidual "files" larger than 4gb, this is because the PS3 will only read an external hard drive if it's formatted "FAT32".

Do not use the online "update" function on the ps3 menu as this will install the lastest firmware, being 3.66, as this cannot be hacked at this moment in time.

You can, however, get a CFW (cracked firmware) that will be 3.55, then install multiman backup manager to play games. Plus there are lots of other advantages these days, like homebrew games, playing emulators like the SNES, Mame, VBA, Sega.

From a legal standpoint in the UK you are not allowed any backups, even if you own the original game. To make a backup you have to break the copyright law.
In the US they used to have fair usage (I think thats what it was called) where you could make a backup of a game if you owned the original. But the DMCA stopped a lot of that because it included a clause that said you could make a backup providing you didnt break any protection, so DVD films are out, but I'm not sure if there is any protection on PS3 games.

I've now got a second PS3 to play around with.
