    Real NOOB question about jailbreaking

I've done as much research as I can stand on Jailbreaking the PS3 and there seems to be very little out there that seems promising. All information seems to point to the fact that it only allows you to run Linux and possibly the Homebrew channel.

    Drawbacks mentioned have included:
    1) running MUCH slower
    2) long load times for all games
    3) lock-ups
    4) never being able to log onto the PSN (this one is contradicted by information claiming that you can download ANYTHING from PSN regardless of cost for free)

Basically what I'm trying to figure out is:
    1) Is jailbreaking the PS3 safe (reasonably safe since obviously it's never COMPLETELY safe)
    2) How exactly is it done
    3) What are the benefits? (what does it allow you to do?)

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I didn't read your post until after I'd answered the one on the same page titled 'Ps3 3.41 Firmware'. Take a look at my reply to that post.

In my experience using Jailbreak for about 8 months now - here's my response to your list of drawbacks -

1 Ps3 speed completely unchanged by JB
2 Load times if game is on Internal HDD are actually faster

3 I haven't experienced this on any game so far.

4 Go to the site mentioned in the other post and you'll
see how others are getting around any PSN problems.
I don't use PSN myself but I have been able to get all game updates from other sources.

I won't try to answer your question on how it's done as it's all explained on the site I have indicated in the other post mentioned above.

Thank you for the information I will continue reading but everything sounds SOOOOO complicated. I managed to mod my Wii a while back with a great deal of help from some really good guys here in the Wii forum. This however is looking like it's going to be so much more complicated. I'm not sure if I'm up to this...
