this hack could potentially do sony alot of good
the ps3 is the only console that doesn't really have a scene

and yes its true in the end they loose some game sales ect
but if this hack is coded , implemented and utilized correctly
and homebrew is born i beleave it could take over xbox in console sales
1000s of modded xbox fans will flock to buy there latest hackable console
i for one will be one of them

i sold my ps3 a year ago due to the fact i never used it because of my flashed xbox

if a good mod chip and mod came out id sure be buying another just to make use of the new exploit

plus if people do manage to get it to run copyed bluerays
then this could create the demand on the product to push there prices's down after all that is bound to happen sooner or later and blueray has to drop of the heavy price tag they hold sooner or later
it was no different with DVDs and DL DVDs

I completely agree, with above mentioned, this will only help PS3 people, however by the time it starts to be popular Sony might just release new console

        Some how I don't thinks so !

Firstly PS3 has up until Uncharted 2 and now Lords of War 3 have had nothing of interest, nearly everything else has been been on the 360 or both consoles.

Secondly Sony are to introduce subscription to online content and online gaming like Xbox live, thus changing the terms and conditions and most likely the introduction of banning pirate consoles.

Finaly the PS3 is far from becoming a puplic hack as there is at least a year left in developing a modchip or other for the world including writing software for the hack to run on the console, yes its hacked but not for us ....

By the by I won't be running linux with 256mb of ram....there is no driver to utilize the graphics card, flash and silverlight haven't been released on Powerpc Linux. The game os has not been cracked, just the restrictions on Linux. It's a long way from a useful hack right now

latest info released was February 13th by Geohotz

              On the Isolated SPUs
Today I verified my theories about running the isolated SPUs as crypto engines. I believe that defeats the last technical argument against the PS3 being hacked.

In OtherOS, all 7 SPUs are idle. You can command an SPU(which I'll leave as an exercise to the reader) to load metldr, from that load the loader of your choice, and from that decrypt what you choose, everything from pkgs to selfs. Including those from future versions.

The PPU is higher on the control chain then the SPUs. Even if checks were to be added to, for example, verify the hypervisor before decrypting the kernel, with clever memory mappings you can hide your modified hypervisor.

Ah, but you still didn't get the Cell root key. And I/we never will. But it doesn't matter. For example, we don't have either the iPhone or PSP "root key". But I don't think anyone doubts the hackedness of those systems.

I wonder if any systems out there are actually secure?

latest from geohotz blog let the hacks commence

As some people in the comments called, it's an RCO file edit, just like RCO edits on the PSP(almost same format too). RCO files are resource files for VSH plugins, live in the dev_flash, and aren't signed. To edit them on your system, patch your hypervisor to allow encrypted access to the partition(flash on old systems, hd on new), and mod ps3pf_storage. dev_flash is just a FAT partition, mount it in Linux and change what you'd like.

its too hard to say right now these things cant really be rushed
as people understand the system more and more and the ps3 starts to give off more of its secrets progress will be made
but it will be a long game i wouldn't put my hopes on it tho

ps3 will never ever be hacked much chance of a fix for nag3

it aint going to happen and even if it did there properly will be a ps5 out by then so no one will want to bother hacking ps3

Sony Planning on Removing Linux to Combat Piracy

Nikkei is reporting that Sony and Nintendo are "stepping up efforts to prevent bootlegged versions of their software from appearing on the internet."
Regarding the PS3 specifically, they reported that Sony are planning to change the operating software for approximately "20 million units," which we assume means the original PlayStation 3 design. They further state that the operating software "that allows the PS3 to operate like a computer" could be changed as early as this month.
Earlier this year, Geohot, the infamous iPhone hacker, reported that he had hacked the PlayStation 3. His exploit was only usable on a "phat" PS3 unit, and required the use of Linux, so it may well be that Sony is patching out the "Other OS" functionality in order to nip piracy in the bud with an April Update.

                              PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update ? PlayStation Blog

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the ?Install Other OS? feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the ?Other OS? feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

                              Consumers and organizations that currently use the ?Other OS? feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

                              * Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
                              * Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
                              * Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
                              * Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the ?Other OS? feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the ?Other OS,? as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here:
                              Sony PlayStation 2010

id like to define the word hack to you

Hacking (English verb to hack, singular noun a hack) refers to the re-configuring or re-programming of a system to function in ways not facilitated by the owner, administrator, or designer. The term(s) have several related meanings in the technology and computer science fields, wherein a "hack" may refer to a clever or quick fix to a computer program problem, or to what may be perceived to be a clumsy or inelegant (but usually relatively quick) solution to a problem (see also "kludge").
The terms "hack" and "hacking" are also used to refer to a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features that were otherwise unavailable, such as DIY circuit bending. It is from this usage that the term "hacking" is often incorrectly used to refer to more nefarious criminal uses such as identity theft, credit card fraud or other actions categorized as computer crime; there being a distinction between security breaking and hacking, a better term for security breaking would be "cracking".[1]

so after reading that usefull information would you still not define the RCO file edit as a hack

just because this current system cant read and play backups doesnt mean that its not a "hack"
